Semrush is widely considered the best and most powerful digital marketing platform on the planet.

It comes with three pricing tiers, each with a wide gap between its pricing and features: Pro, Guru, and Business. Each is tailored to the specific needs and budgets of freelancers, small businesses, agencies, bloggers, and large enterprises.

Semrush Plans Compared: Detailed Breakdown

Here’s a detailed comparison of each Semrush plan based on specific use cases:

1. Core SEO & Keyword Research Features

First and foremost, all Semrush subscription plans come with powerful keyword research features.

This includes:

✅ Keyword research and analysis tools (Keyword Magic Tool and Keyword Overview)

✅ Rank tracking (Position Tracking)

✅ Competitor keyword analysis (Organic Research)

FeaturePro ($129.95 per month)Guru ($249.95 per month)Business ($499.95 per month)

Keyword Gap Analysis

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that Keyword Magic Tool is one of my favorite Semrush tools due to how intuitive and powerful it is.

To use Keyword Magic Tool, just enter a seed keyword, enter your domain for personalized results (optional), set your location, and click ‘Search.’

The limitation differences between the Pro, Guru, and Business plans are also very generous — you won’t even notice the difference except if you’re specifically looking for historical data.

For example, the Pro plan ensures you get up to 10,000 rows of keywords to begin with. That’s more than enough for even large businesses, especially if you use filters to narrow down your search to relevant and highly valuable keywords.

Keep in mind that, although the report says “All keywords: 64.1K,” Pro users will only be able to access 10,000 of them in a single report. This limit is increased to 30,000 for Guru and 50,000 for Business.

In case you really do need that extra 20,000 or 40,000 rows of keywords, remember that you can always run multiple searches with the Pro plan — manually using filters to exclude keywords you already found.

Still, upgrading to the Guru or Business plans is much more efficient than repeating this process manually each time. Not to mention that you’ll have more robust limits in other features, including the Position Tracking tool.

This is useful for tracking your SEO performance in profitable target keywords.

The next step is to enter your target market and keyword details. Your keyword limit should be visible in the keyword form field.

For a solo blogger or startup, 500 tracked keywords should be more than enough to help your online brand gain some traction — making Semrush Pro a great, cost-effective choice.

But if you’re running an international brand or ecommerce business with a diverse mix of product categories, you probably need Semrush Business to track and improve keyword positions for thousands of product pages. This is also practical for marketing agencies that handle dozens of websites for multiple clients.

For medium-sized retail retailers and providers of specific products or professional services (e.g., website design and home repair services), you may need Semrush Guru — the sweet spot for growing businesses. This makes sense if you offer services over specific locations, which require optimization for local keywords (i.e., HVAC repair services los angeles).

Also, the time it takes to finish setting up the Position Tracking tool depends on the size of your keywords list. When done, you’ll be able to easily identify your top-performing keywords, cumulative visibility across all keywords, organic rankings distribution, and more.

There are other key differences between the Semrush subscription plans you should be aware of in terms of keyword research.

For example, when using the Keyword Strategy Builder, Semrush Pro will only refresh your target keyword metrics up to 250 times per month.

Keyword Strategy Builder is highly valuable when creating well-researched topic clusters for your website. Unfortunately, 250 metrics refreshes may not be enough if you have a mid-large business with hundreds or thousands of pages.

This is when it may become necessary to upgrade to Semrush Guru (1,000 keyword refreshes per month) or Semrush Business (5,000 keyword refreshes per month).

📌 Verdict: Semrush Pro is excellent for starters whereas Guru is great for fast-growing businesses that need to optimize. Agencies and large websites, on the other hand, need the extended capabilities of Semrush Business to optimize their content for thousands of target keywords.

2. Content Marketing Features (Guru & Business Only)

First of all, if you want to use Semrush for content marketing, you need to upgrade to either Semrush Guru or Semrush Business.

Here’s a quick look at these features:

SEO Writing Assistant → Get automated suggestions to optimize your content for SEO.

Content Audit → Conduct a thorough analysis of your pages and posts to spot optimization opportunities

Post Tracking → Measure and monitor the traction of your guest posts and PR campaign content

FeatureGuru ($249.95 per month)Business ($499.95 per month)
Content Marketing Toolkit
Unlimited topic research
SEO content templates8002,000
Plagiarism checks per month510

Both Semrush Guru and Semrush Business come with the exact same tools through the Content Marketing Toolkit.

For example, the SEO Writing Assistant works exactly the same between these plans.

This is a powerful content optimization tool that can provide you with actionable optimization recommendations. You can also use the built-in generative AI tools like the rephraser, composer, and “Ask AI.”

Remember, this is already a $100 value, especially if you look at the monthly pricing of tools with similar features like Surfer.

Both Semrush Guru and Business also come with unlimited access to the Topic Research tool.

This works by expanding your target keyword into a long list of potential content topics — making content ideation an absolute breeze. Once the ideas are in, click on one to find top-performing headline examples as well as popular questions, which can give your content a more unique angle or value.

What really makes the difference between Semrush Guru and Semrush Business (in terms of content marketing tools) are the limitations for SEO content templates and monthly plagiarism checks.

Let’s take a closer look.

To use the SEO Content Template tool, simply enter your target keyword(s) and click ‘Create content template.’

Once generated, your content template will include a ton of valuable suggestions to ensure you create highly optimized articles. This includes semantic keywords, potential backlink sources, word count, references, and more.

The 800 templates you can use with Semrush Guru are already plenty for small-medium businesses and most bloggers, especially considering that each template is customizable on the fly. However, getting more than double the limit in addition to more plagiarism checks per month with Semrush Business is a must for marketing agencies and large businesses that have a team of in-house writers or external contributors.

With Semrush Guru and Business, you also gain access to the built-in plagiarism checker — perfect if you’re working with a team of content writers.

Semrush Guru will get you five plagiarism checks a month. That’s enough for one website, especially if you’re only checking long-form, pillar, or “ultimate guide” content.

The plagiarism checker is accessible through the SEO Writing Assistant.

With Semrush Business, you get a total of 10 free plagiarism checks per month — double the limit from the Guru plan, but still realistically quite low especially if you’re managing multiple sites that publish several posts per week each.

Still, this is an extra $30 value per month, considering the cost of other writing assistants with built-in plagiarism checks like Grammarly

In terms of content marketing, it may seem like you’re missing out on a lot if you choose Semrush Pro.

The good news is, you have another option to save money while unlocking advanced content marketing features.

Rather than paying $110 more to upgrade from Semrush Pro to Guru, you can instead purchase ContentShake AI as an add-on for $60. That means you’ll only pay $199.95 per month (instead of $249.95 per month) to get a Semrush subscription with advanced, AI-powered content marketing features.

Here’s a quick breakdown of ContentShake AI’s features:

  • Article Optimization — Optimize existing drafts for higher user engagement and SEO.
  • Generate Content Drafts — Use a prompt-based system to generate an entire first draft with AI.
  • Generate Social Media Posts — Create social media post captions or short-form articles.
  • Automate Content Brief Creation — Generate ready-to-use, SEO-friendly outlines for your content team within minutes.

📌 Verdict: Semrush Guru is good for small businesses and bloggers, whereas Semrush Business is useful for companies with in-house or external content creation teams. Semrush Pro for content marketing is only useful if you combine your subscription with ContentShake AI.

3. Competitive Analysis & Traffic Insights

Thorough competitor analysis is one of the biggest reasons why Semrush is considered a top-tier marketing tool.

All Semrush subscriptions have the tools you need to dissect your competitors’ strategies, like:

✅ Spy on your competitor’s top organic keywords

✅ Scan and dissect your competitors’ backlink profiles

✅ Inspect your competitors’ PPC ads strategy

FeaturePro ($129.95 per month)Guru ($249.95 per month)Business ($499.95 per month)
Traffic Analytics
Market Explorer
API Access

Make no mistake that, in terms of out-of-the-box competitive analysis features, there’s very little difference between Semrush Pro, Guru, and Business.

All have access to the “Traffic Analytics” and “Domain Analysis” features, which are critical for understanding the inner workings of your competitors’ strategies.

Both tools can be found under the “Competitive Research” section of the main menu.

To use Domain Overview, just enter the URL of the website you want to inspect.

Remember, this can be your competitor’s website or your own.

Within seconds, you’ll find a comprehensive report of the website’s online presence. This includes metrics like total backlinks, average organic search traffic, audience distribution by location, and top keywords.

With the Traffic Analytics tool, the report focuses more on visitor behavior and what the average user experience looks like. You’ll find data sections like traffic journey, traffic trends per device, and organic traffic changes over time.

Take note that plan-specific limitations apply when viewing in-depth data for certain sections (i.e., clicking ‘View details’ under “Top Organic Keywords”).

For example, when viewing your competitor’s organic keywords with Semrush Pro, the report would be limited to 10,000 rows of data. That’s 30,000 rows for Semrush Guru and 50,000 rows for Semrush Business.

This shouldn’t be a big deal for mid-size businesses. But if you’re a large, international brand that competes against large websites with potentially hundreds of thousands or millions of keywords, going for Semrush Guru or Semrush Business is only practical.

Another crucial difference is API access.

If you run an agency that needs to offer a “client portal” with customized reports or dashboards, you’ll need to upgrade to Semrush Guru or Business

📌 Verdict: Semrush Pro and Guru should suffice for freelancers, bloggers, and businesses who need comprehensive competitor analysis. However, agencies that need to utilize Semrush data via the API should get Semrush Business.

4. Advertising Research

PPC advertising is one of the pillars of a well-rounded online presence for businesses. And to help this cause, Semrush provides the following essential (and some game-changing) features:

✅ Power integrations with AI-powered advertising management tools (AdCreatives.ai and Ads Launch Assistant)

✅ Build a master list of advertising keywords using the PPC Keyword Tool

✅ All of Semrush’s keyword research tools (e.g., Keyword Magic Tool and Position Tracking), but for PPC campaigns

FeaturePro ($129.95 per month)Guru ($249.95 per month)Business ($499.95 per month)
Integrations
PPC Keyword Tool
Keyword Research
PLA Research

First of all, Semrush also offers its core keyword research tools, namely Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracker, and Keyword Strategy Builder, to be used specifically for PPC advertising.

You should notice these tools are also accessible under the “Advertising” sub-menu.

Take note that these tools retain all of their features. They also have the exact same features — except for the “PPC Keyword Tool,” which is specifically designed for PPC keyword research.

To start using the PPC Keyword Tool, create a project by entering your domain URL. You can then import the keywords you want to use in your strategy.

Your options include manual keyword inputs, direct keyword list imports from Semrush, or file uploads (.TXT, .CSV, .XLSX).

Once your keywords are imported, you’ll be able to organize, clean up, and manage all your PPC keywords in one place.

Here’s the fun part: You can easily expand Semrush’s PPC research and management capabilities through integrations.

There are three ready-to-use integrations readily available (requiring separate subscriptions):

  • AdCreative.ai — Use generative AI to instantly create engaging ad copies, headlines, and visual assets.
  • Ads Launch Assistant — Create, manage, and optimize your ads on Google and Meta (e.g., Facebook and Instagram) with easy access to Semrush data.
  • AdClarity — Analyze your competitor’s advertising strategy, focusing on metrics like ad spend, impressions, and more.

You can find these integrations directly under the “Advertising” sub-menu.

Finally, Semrush Business users will be able to use Semrush data to optimize their Product Listing Ads (PLA). These refer to paid product placements in Google Shopping, making sure you get high-quality traffic right to your money pages.

By going to ‘PLA Research,’ you’ll be able to uncover valuable insights like your PLA positions, competitor data, and ad copies.

While Semrush Pro and Guru users will be able to access a limited version of this tool, PLA research only comes fully unlocked with a Semrush Business subscription.

📌 Verdict: Both Semrush Pro and Guru have powerful PPC management tools for small and medium businesses. But if your company (or client) is a large ecommerce brand that uses PLAs, Semrush Business is a must-have.

5. Reporting

Finally, reporting is a crucial aspect of Semrush that allows you to easily turn in-depth data into actionable insights.

In terms of reporting, we need to note the differences in aspects like data collection (site audits or pages crawled) all the way to PDF scheduling.

✅ Conduct a thorough analysis of your website with Site Audits

✅ Automate reporting through scheduled, visual PDF reports

✅ Use SEO Ideas Units for keyword optimization in SEO content templates, SEO Writing Assistant, and On-Page SEO Checker

FeaturePro ($129.95 per month)Guru ($249.95 per month)Business ($499.95 per month)
Site Audit/Crawls100,000 per month300,000 per month1,000,000 per month
Scheduled ReportsUp to 5 per monthUp to 20 per monthUp to 50 per month
SEO Ideas Units500 per month800 per month2,000 per month

To make the most out of Semrush’s reporting tools, you NEED to run a complete site audit.

Thankfully, all of Semrush’s subscription plans have a generous crawling allowance to thoroughly check your website.

Semrush Pro, for example, crawls up to 100,000 pages per month — more than enough for any small-medium business with a single website.

This limit is bumped up to 300,000 pages per month for Semrush Guru all the way to 1,000,000 pages per month. While these limits seem like overkill for solo bloggers, freelancers, or small-medium businesses, they make perfect sense if you’re managing multiple websites as an agency or large enterprise.

To run a site audit, simply enter your domain and hit ‘Start Audit.’ You’ll then be able to configure a few things, like the number of pages to crawl, URLs to exclude, and an ongoing site audit schedule.

Once the site audit is done, you’ll be able to track valuable performance metrics as well as find optimization opportunities. You can easily switch tabs to fulfill specific tasks, like ‘Issues’ to find high-priority SEO optimizations and ‘Crawled Pages’ for page-level analysis.

Take note that nearly every analytics page on Semrush can be exported as a shareable PDF file — perfect if you’re a freelancer, agency, or in-house SEO specialist. It also helps to automate self-reports to ensure your strategies are working as well.

The real hero, however, is Semrush’s robust PDF report builder.

By clicking ‘My Reports,’ you’ll be able to piece together data visualizations from a number of data sources, including integrations from third-party tools (e.g., Google Analytics 4 and Ahrefs) and Semrush’s analytics tools.

Everything here is drag-and-drop — no need to mess with code or learn complicated interfaces.

When done, you can schedule your reports to automatically send to a list of email recipients.

This is where the differences between the Semrush subscriptions become more noticeable.

With Semrush Pro, you can prepare up to five scheduled PDF reports — enough for a small business or freelancer. Semrush Guru brings up this limit to 20 scheduled reports, whereas Semrush Business maxes out at 50 scheduled PDF reports

Lastly, there are wider gaps between Semrush Pro, Guru, and Business in terms of the “SEO Ideas Units” you can use.

These are essentially credits that you can use for keyword analysis with Semrush’s SEO content templates, SEO Writing Assistant, and the on-page SEO checker.

The higher your SEO Ideas Units, the more keyword optimizations you can perform.

Here’s a quick rundown of the limits per Semrush subscription:

  • Semrush Pro — 500 SEO Ideas Units
  • Semrush Guru — 800 SEO Ideas Units
  • Semrush Business — 2,000 SEO Ideas Units

Use Cases: Which Semrush Plan is Best For You?

To make sure you get the best Semrush plan for your goals, let’s go over a few use cases and what subscription plan fits them best.

Freelancers and Bloggers → Semrush Pro

If you’re a freelancer or blogger who only needs to focus on one website (or, for some reason, up to five websites), Semrush Pro is perfect for you.

It offers all core SEO tools to help you build a strategy to reach Google’s first page. This includes the Keyword Magic Tool, Site Audits, and Rank Tracking, to manage your own website.

📌 Verdict: Semrush Pro is great for bloggers, solopreneurs, and small businesses — but limited for larger businesses or agencies with more robust needs.

Growing Businesses & Content Marketers → Semrush Guru

Semrush Guru is a considerable upgrade from Semrush Pro. Not only does it come with extended limitations on things like projects and keywords tracked, but it also unlocks additional features like:

  • Historical data → Review how your (or your competitor’s) website changed and evolved over time.
  • Content Marketing Toolkit → Get instant topic ideas, create SEO content templates, and perform plagiarism checks.
  • Google Looker Studio integration → Transform your Semrush data into readable data visualizations and dashboards.

📌 Verdict: Semrush Guru is great for fast-growing businesses, marketers, and bloggers that handle multiple sites. It also does well for smaller agencies that have 15 or fewer clients.

Agencies & Large Enterprises → Semrush Business

There are two compelling reasons to choose Semrush Business over Semrush Guru.

One: if you’re an agency that has over 15 clients. And two: if you run a large ecommerce website with thousands of target keywords.

The API access is also a nice addition for agencies with a custom client portal, allowing them to create dashboard reports with unique features.

📌 Verdict: Semrush Business unlocks everything the platform has to offer — ideal for agencies and large businesses that require extended limitations.

Cost-Benefit Analysis: Is Semrush Worth The Price?

The last question we need to address is, is Semrush worth the investment?

Or are you better off working with a marketing agency or full-time SEO specialist?

To put things into perspective, remember that the average cost of a full-time analyst or monthly agency service is around $5,000 per month — that’s already 10x the cost of Semrush’s most expensive plan.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the value of Semrush’s features:

  • Competitor analysis → $499 value
  • Keyword research → $200 value
  • Backlink audit → $300 value
  • Content marketing insights → $400 value

Want to know something cool?

You get all those benefits with just the Semrush Guru plan at $249.95 per month.

💡 Not only are you saving over $5,000 per month, you’re also getting at least five times the value of the cost of your subscription.

📌 Verdict: If SEO is important to your online business—or, if you value your online presence—don’t worry about Semrush. Any subscription tier pays for itself within the first month of use.

Final Thoughts: Which Semrush Plan Should You Choose?

To summarize, here’s a quick rundown of Semrush’s pricing plans and why you should choose them:

  • Semrush Pro → Great starting point for beginners, bloggers, and freelancers.
  • Semrush Guru → Cost-effective option for thriving online businesses and marketing agencies.
  • Semrush Business → A must-have for established businesses and high-volume marketing agencies.
