Looking for a detailed Grammarly Free vs Premium comparison?

Your search is over.

In this post, we’ll look at how Grammarly’s free version stacks up against Grammarly Premium.

Let’s get started.

What does the free version of Grammarly do?

Grammarly free automatically detects grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. It also lets you set custom writing goals, identify clarity issues, improve conciseness, and more.

Grammarly Homepage

Grammarly free can be used in various ways to fit different workflows:

  • Grammarly online editor: Log in to the Grammarly website and upload or paste drafts to the web-based editor.
  • Browser extension: Check basic grammatical and spelling mistakes on supported sites and content formats (emails, social media posts, etc.).
  • Desktop app: Launch and use the Grammarly writing assistant straight from your desktop.
  • Microsoft Word Add-in: Integrate Grammarly into Microsoft Word via the free add-in.
  • Grammarly keyboard: Avoid grammar and spelling mistakes whenever you type on your smartphone or tablet.
  • GrammarlyGo: Get 100 AI prompts to generate outlines, ideas, and other types of text.

No — you don’t need to pay for Grammarly Premium to use these tools.

So, what exactly makes Grammarly Premium different?

Grammarly Free vs Premium: What’s the difference?

Grammarly’s free version includes everything you can expect from a professional grammar checker. But with Grammarly Premium, you get extra tools like the plagiarism checker, industry-based writing suggestions, automated citations, advanced reports, and more.

Grammarly Free detects grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes as well as provides one-click correction suggestions. The writing assistant also generates a text score that grades content according to readability, correctness, and overall quality.

Grammarly Free writing suggestions and goals

Grammarly Free features:

  • Complete grammar checker
  • Spelling mistakes detection
  • Tone detection
  • Punctuation mistakes detection
  • Conciseness checker
  • Custom goals based on your writing style
  • Basic GrammarlyGo
  • Mobile app, browser extension, desktop app, and MS Word add-in

Grammarly Premium includes everything the free version has to offer.

It also brings a host of amazing new features that will elevate your writing:

Grammarly Premium feature: Writing domain for goals

Grammarly Premium version fine-tunes its grammar rules and provides writing style suggestions based on “domain” goals.

Domains pertain to sets of guides and conventions that apply to different writing landscapes, such as:

  • Academic: Strictly enforce formal writing rules and conventions.
  • Business: Enforce most writing rules with flexibility for certain informal expressions, phrases, and words.
  • General: Enforce most writing rules with moderate strictness.
  • Email: Enforce most rules and conventions along with email copywriting tactics.
  • Casual: Check punctuation, spelling, and grammar mistakes while allowing stylized writing.
  • Creative: Flexibly enforce rules to enable creative freedom.

To set custom goals with the Grammarly Editor, click ‘Goals’ in the writing assistant panel.

Setting custom writing goals with Grammarly

Choose the domain that applies to your current writing project.

Take note that you can also select the “intent,” “audience,” and “formality” in your writing goals. These are available with the free version of Grammarly, but you need Grammarly Premium to specify a domain.

Tip: Select “Show Set Goals when I start a new document” if you want to modify goals each time you write something new.

Grammarly Premium Feature: Plagiarism checker

Grammarly Premium comes with a built-in plagiarism checker that scans over 16 billion web pages and academic papers indexed in the ProQuest database.

Plagiarism—intentional or not—is a detrimental problem in the professional, academic, and creative writing industries. It leads to consequences that could be easily avoided through proper paraphrasing or citations.

To use Grammarly Premium’s plagiarism checker, click ‘Plagiarism’ at the bottom of the writing assistant panel.

Grammarly Plagiarism Checker

Within seconds, Grammarly will highlight text that matches a source on the internet. The tool also reveals the exact title of the source article followed by a link.

Click the reference box at the center of the suggestion if you wish to add a citation. Alternatively, modify or remove the matching text to prevent plagiarism hits.

Grammarly Premium feature: Tone, full-sentence, and vocabulary enhancement suggestions

Grammarly Premium lets you polish content with suggestions pertaining to tone, full-sentence rewrites, and word choices. These suggestions will help you avoid using a recurring and boring sentence structure throughout articles.

You’ll find premium suggestions mixed in with other correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery suggestions in the writing assistant panel.

GrammarlyGo Free vs Premium

GrammarlyGo is a generative AI that can speed up writing tasks. With the correct prompts, it can generate headline ideas, outlines, sections, or even entire drafts.

Both Grammarly Free and Premium users can enjoy the benefits of GrammarlyGo. However, there are a few distinct differences in features and limitations between the free and premium versions of GrammarlyGo.

For starters, Grammarly Free users are limited to only 100 AI prompts per month. Grammarly Premium users, on the other hand, can use 1,000 prompts.

GrammarlyGo Premium AI prompts limit

Of course, I also compared the performance of GrammarlyGo on free and premium subscriptions.

Using the prompt “create an outline for a 1,000-word article called ‘What is Grammarly’,” GrammarlyGo Premium generated a more comprehensive output.

GrammarlyGo Premium Output

I know — generative AI always gets random results. So, I ran the same test multiple times to confirm whether GrammarlyGo Premium really delivers more comprehensive results.

The results, however, are consistent that GrammarlyGo for premium users produces more detailed and longer outputs than for free users.

What are the downsides of Grammarly Free?

Grammarly Free is good for detecting and correcting basic spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors. But it doesn’t have features that improve the quality and consistency of your writing style—not to mention it lacks the plagiarism checker.

If you’re a business, agency, or educational organization that checks the submissions of writers and students, Grammarly Free won’t cut it.

Is Grammarly Premium worth it?

Grammarly Premium is worth every penny if you want to unlock the maximum quality possible from your write-ups. If you proofread or edit loads of content on a daily basis, its one-click suggestions for enhancing your content’s tone, correctness, and readability are a huge time-saver.

If you need more information about what makes Grammarly premium worth it, then you can read this article.

Is Grammarly worth it without Premium?

Grammarly’s free version is still a capable tool for students and, to a degree, professional copywriters in ironing out spelling and grammatical errors. But for serious bloggers, agencies, businesses, and college students, Grammarly Premium’s features—from advanced vocabulary suggestions to plagiarism checks—are indispensable.

How much does Grammarly cost?

Grammarly Premium costs $30 per month with monthly billing. With an annual plan, the monthly cost is reduced to $12 per month, but you have to pay an upfront price of $144 for the entire year.
