6 Best Plagiarism Checker Tools For Flawless Writing

It doesn't matter if you are working on a homework assignment or writing a blog post, it’s important to make sure your content is plagiarism-free.

If you don’t know what plagiarism is, in simple words, it means copying someone else’s content without prior consent from the author or giving credit to the author.

Even if it were not your intentions to copy someone else’s work, you might have done that unintentionally in the past.

And no matter what field you are in, it’s not only unethical, but also a crime to copy someone else’s work and publish it as your own.

So, to save you tons of embarrassment and fines here’s a list of the best plagiarism checkers there are on the internet.

Best Online Plagiarism Checker Tools

1. Grammarly

While Grammarly is primarily known as a Grammar Checking tool, it’s premium version also includes an integrated Plagiarism Checker.

It checks your content for any pieces of plagiarized content against its database of over 8 million web pages.

Grammarly plagiarism checker

If you are a blogger, I would highly recommend you to start using Grammarly today.

It is more than just a Grammar Checking tool.

It offers hundreds of features including:

  • Checks for over 250 Grammatical Mistakes.
  • Checks your content against over 8 million web pages for plagiarism.
  • Contextual spelling checker.
  • Vocabulary enhancement.

You can use Grammarly for free (as a grammar checker), but if you want to use their Plagiarism Checker, you will have to pay for a premium subscription.

Grammarly is a great tool I recommend to everyone who has anything to do with writing.

Try Grammarly!

2. CopyScape

I am pretty sure you have seen one of those “protected by CopyScape” badges on blogs.

If you haven’t, CopyScape is one of the oldest plagiarism checking tools on the internet.

It’s been around for a really long time.

While the website might look really old and crappy, CopyScape is a really powerful tool.

Without a premium account, you can only check web pages for plagiarism.

If you want to check your offline content, you will have to buy a subscription.

Premium version of CopyScape includes a lot more features and can even scan your whole website for plagiarism.

Try CopyScape!

3. WhiteSmoke

WhiteSmoke is an awesome proofreading tool that helps you write better content.

It not only checks for Grammatical mistakes but also checks for plagiarism.

One of the best things about this tool is that, unlike most tools, it integrates directly with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Not only that, it comes with a browser extension and a mobile app.

4. Plagiarism Checker by Dustball

This plagiarism checker by Dustball has been online since 2002.

It is one of the oldest plagiarism checkers online and has a really big database.

One great benefit of using this tool is that, unlike its competitors, it doesn’t store the content you check on its servers.

While there’s a premium version that offers 3x more accurate results (as stated on the website), their free tool is pretty accurate and can detect most pieces of plagiarism in your content.

Try Dustball!

5. Plagium

Plagium is a free plagiarism checker tool.

It’s been online since 2006 and checks your content for free as long as you don’t make too many requests.

Plagium Plagiarism Checker

One of the best things about it is that, unlike other tools, it even compares your content with social media posts on Facebook and Twitter.

It offers its quick search functionality for free as long as you don’t cross the limit.

If you want the check to be more accurate, you can try a deep search which costs $0.08 per page.

Try Plagium!

6. UnPlag

UnPlag is a popular plagiarism checker that comes with a lot of features.

It is probably the fastest plagiarism checker online as it only takes 4 seconds to complete a plagiarism check.

Unplag Plagiarism Checker

It’s really easy to use to this simple tool.

You can either paste your content or upload your document.

And it checks your content against Bing’s whole database within a few seconds.

One great thing about UnPlag is, just like Dustball, it doesn’t save the content you check.

Try Unplag!

Conclusion

I hope these tools help you write better content, avoid embarrassment.

Most of these tools will allow you to check your content for plagiarism for free, but if you want better and accurate results, it’s highly recommended that you give their premium versions a try.

I use Grammarly premium myself and recommend the same.

Did I miss something?

What’s your go to plagiarism checking tool?

  5. Adesanmi Adedotun

    Hi Ankit,

Plagiarism is one of the great turn off of both bloggers and search engines. I hardly knew most of this tools except Copyscape which happened to be the last tools on the list.

I always wanted to know the possible way to check am I plagiarizing or not. Now I can use these tools for my convenient.

    Thanks for sharing, Ankit.

    • thank you for the warm welcome Ade. it seems that copyscape is the most popular among the 7 tools

  6. Plagiarism is a real problem these days with so many bloggers copying articles frim eatabilished bloggers and competing for the same blogosphere space.
I have used Plagiarism Checker by
Small SEO Tools and Copyscape. Both are very handy tools and easy to use too.

    • hi Ankur, thanks for sharing your experience in using small SEO tools and Copyscape.

  7. Hello Ankit, thanks for sharing this guide with us. These are a lot of tools, i only knew about small seo tools , but now i think i can try another. Anyway thanks for this awesome guide again.

    • hi sumanth. those tools are all effective. before i wrote this article, i considered creating around 20 plus plagiarism checker tools but many tools that i found online are not effective in checking plagiarism. so i only choose few but effective in checking duplicate content. still prefer quality versus quantity

  8. Hi,
These are really a great list. Using a software to male article unique is really easy now. But It is bad part-ice if you are doing these types of things.

If you have have some guest author check the article before publishing it.

  9. There were only two tools in my knowledge to check duplicate content. One is Copyscape and another one is Scanmyessay. Thanks to you that you increase my knowledge with sharing more tools. This place is one of best and among those emerging platform to get valued information.

    Happy Blogging.

  10. Alain Schlesser

    Hi Ankit,

Thanks for the list, this comes in real handy at the moment. I’m currently outsourcing lots of content, and although most of the sites and tools assure you that they run everything through Copyscape to make sure it was original content, I’ve found that this is not always the case…

So better be safe than sorry! 😉

    • you’re always welcome Alain and thank you for visiting

  11. Great list though my favorite is smallseotools and its also free. I have also used a couple of the tools here.

  12. Amazing lists! I already tried most of the lists, but somehow it gives me a headache……. I really don’t know why, but I guess I hate the fact that I thought most of my contents are original and unique. I just found out that they are not :(. Oh well, some of the lists really taught me a lot of things…..

  13. Interesting thoughts…I do rely on copyscape somewhat because I simply don’t have time to manually check articles. How would you check in the protected areas or in torrents anyway? I would think it would be basically impossible to check an article for plagiarism with the breadth of the internet these days…

How do you know that your writers are not plagiarizing? What sort of checking processes do you use?

    • hi smita. paid plagiarism checkers usually offer services far better than free plagiarism checkers such as deeper search. i am not sure though if it can check protected areas or torrents since i have not tried any paid plagiarism checker such as Turnitin

hmm. this gave me an idea for another article. i am now aiming to research about the services that offered by paid plagiarism programs

  14. Hi Ankit Singla,

Thanks for sharing this amazing information. I knew about Copyscape but I did not have idea about other plagiarism tool. thanks once again.
I just want to ask, Is there any wordpress plugin which could alert you if your content is being used by someone else ?

    • hi viniyesh
i think this link will answer your question wordpress.org/plugins/plagiarism/
i have not tried it yet though but it has 3.7 out of 5 stars. so i think it is effective so far.

  20. Ankit, it’s a very good tip post!

Plagiarism is a problem that bloggers should always care about.

I’ve recently passed through this situation and I asked Google for help. I was luck that the plagiarism was at a blogger site and Google could remove it fast.

By the way, I prefer Copyscape.com because it’s free and we only need to enter the post url.

    Bye!

    • hi bruno. yep bloggers mostly prefer copyscape. but in my case as a freelance writer my articles are not posted in websites but they are in MS word files. so i need other kinds of tools aside from copyscape

      thanks for reading my p

  21. Hello buddy these tools are really very helpul for checking the uniqueness of your blog content.I usually prefer small SEO tools for checking quality of my content…

    • hello harmeet. thanks for reading my blog. see you again here soon and regards

  22. Hi, thanks for the article. You missed one very important tool unplag.com I am a freelance writer and I use it to check my paper against 16 000 000 000 web-pages. They are partners with Google and Bing that allows to scan the Internet officially

  23. Hi Ankit Singla,

I am new to blogging, I don’t know about plagiarism till now, after reading your post I got a fair idea about this problem, from today onward I will check all my new articles for plagiarism test.

can you please suggest me, how to take care this problem.

  24. Yes, thats a great list of tools. However personally I use noplag.com to check something fast and paid tools like grammanrly for deeper analyzes.

    • I personally use Grammarly and very much happy with that. 🙂

  25. Really Copyscape is a great site where anyone can check duplicate content of their site. But copyscape accepts request only 10 days in a month to verify duplicate content of the websites.

  26. There is no doubt that duplicate content is dangerous to a website or blog. Copyscape, Siteliner and Grammarly are great tools that I have used till now. I never used dustball.com, so I should thank you for introducing myself with this site.

  27. I am satisfied with copyscape and grammerly results , but smallseotools never impressed me much. Still it is always good to keep checking content for copyright.

  28. It is really sad when i see that people copy content even today. I appreciate the sites you have shared here. I also use copyscape and siteliner to find copy content.

  29. I still think that unplag.com is the best plagiarism checker.

The check speed is one of the best among others. And it’s simple to use. For me it’s important

  30. Hi Ankit Bro

thanks for this nice and useful article. I just have a question about Small SEO tools Plagiarism Checker. Is it trustful?
Many of the responses are against it.

    Plz respond asap!

    Thanks
    ~Abhishek

  31. Hi Ankit!
I think SmallSEOTools is best tool to find out duplicate content.
Thanks to sharing such a great list including best plagiarism checker tools.
    Keep writing!

  32. Thank you very much for the review. I am really against the free plagiarism checkers as I think they are stealing people’s documents. The checker that I use is http:plagiarismdetection.org It suits me well as I do my regular plagiarism checks with it with no problem.

  33. Hi Ankit,

I’m trying to decide between Grammarly and Copyscape. As you recommend I’m leaning toward Grammarly but I also need the feature of knowing when somebody’s stealing content from my website or one of my client’ss websites.

Neither Grammarly or Copyscape have a customer service phone or chat to get questions answered. Because you use Grammarly you know if it has the aforementioned feature.

Thanks for a great and valuable article!
    John
