In this post, we’ll get you a brand spanking new page builder for your WordPress site.

Don’t worry — it’s going to be an easy decision for you.

We will discuss the top WordPress page builders that can replace the boring old Gutenberg editor, including factors like:

Let’s get started.

What are Page Builders?

A page builder is a tool that allows even non-developers to build fantastic web pages.

Most page builders have a drag-and-drop visual interface that eliminates the need for code.

The top three page builders we’ll feature in this list are as follows:

  • Save

Elementor is widely regarded as the top WordPress page builder money can buy today. It lets you build beautiful web pages, pop-ups, subscription forms, and custom widgets to supercharge your WordPress development.

If your WordPress site is powered by Elegant Themes, Divi is a must-have. The page building process is simplified with features like shape dividers, pre-made visual elements, and layouts.

Thrive Architect

Thrive Architect is a low-key powerful page builder once you get past the somewhat cluttered settings pages. You can go deep with image customizations, colors, and typography options.

Who are Page Builders for?

The page builders we’ll talk about in this post are all designed for the WordPress Content Management System or CMS.

If you’re any of the following, then a top-notch page builder is a great investment for you:

Wait… doesn’t WordPress already have a page builder?

The short answer is no — WordPress does not have a page builder baked into the platform.

Later versions of WordPress have the Gutenberg editor, which allows you to visually edit the content of any page.

However, it’s still not a proper page builder that lets you customize every aspect of your website’s design.

Page Builders vs. Gutenberg Editor

Here’s a closer look at the differences between the Gutenberg visual editor and a full-fledged page builder:

Page Builder cons

Personally, being able to preview your changes in real time is what I like most about page builders.

When working with code, you almost always need a separate tab to reload and preview the page.

You won’t have to experience the same inconvenience with a page builder.

This won’t happen to you if you have a page builder.

The Top Five WordPress Page Builder Software

Without further ado, here are the best WordPress page builders on the market.

Do note that these tools are arranged based on how strongly I would recommend them.

It’s not really a competition between these page builders — I personally like all of them.

But to help you make a great investment, I’ll rate each page builder according to the following factors:

With that out of the way, let me start with the page builder I personally use.

1. Elementor

  • Save

Full disclosure, I personally use Elementor on Master Blogging.

Elementor is a popular page builder that sets the bar in terms of usability, features, and cost-effectiveness.

It may be relatively new to the scene, but it’s quickly become an industry leader.

It’s just a guess, but I think part of the reason is the ad that impactfully highlighted its features.

What are Elementor’s main features?

Let’s talk about the reasons why Elementor is considered one of the best page builders out there.

1. Over 90 widgets to build your WordPress site with

Every page builder uses a specific term like “element” and “module” to describe the things you add to your site.

Elementor calls them widgets.

As of writing this, Elementor supports over 90 pre-built widgets to help you build a fully-working site in seconds.

That means you can create functional pages with buttons, accordions, tabs, menus, and animated headlines — without ever touching code.

2. Very intuitive user interface

Elementor’s page builder interface is, by far, the most intuitive I’ve ever used.

It offers a true drag-and-drop experience with plenty of pre-configured widgets to get you off on the right track.

Just look for the widget you want to use and drag it to any section.

Having trouble finding the widget you want? Simply type what you need into the search bar — Elementor will pull it up in a jiffy.

I also find Elementor’s “Dark Mode” very useful.

Here are some facts:

3. Save Global widgets — use them anytime

Elementor lets you customize widgets to your liking straight from the left panel. Not only that, it also allows you to save your customized element as a “Global” widget.

Once saved, you can add your Global widget to anywhere on your website.

Let’s say you want to create a simple “Buy Now” button.

After adding the button widget to your page, click on it to see the available customization settings.

After customizing your widget, right-click the blue “Edit” button in the upper-right corner and click “Save as a Global.” Your Global widget should now be ready for use.

4. Large library of templates

A lot of WordPress users purchase themes and page builders based on the existing templates available.

Templates shave a lot of time off the design process. And with Elementor, there’s no shortage of professional-looking page templates for practically every niche.

You’ll find page templates for agencies, restaurants, hotels, blogs, and more.

Elementor also features templates for blocks. These are individual page sections that you can mix and match depending on what you need.

5. Integrates with some industry-leading services

In my book, a proper page builder supports third-party integrations to make your web design workflow more streamlined.

Elementor isn’t the only page builder here with integrations, but the services it connects with are quite notable.

It has integrations with some of the top digital marketing and CRM tools like HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Zapier, and more.

Reviewing Elementor’s support

If you look around the web, you’ll get mixed reviews on Elementor’s support.

It’s true that a ticketing system isn’t something everyone is willing to settle for. That’s despite the fact that Elementor offers priority support for pro users.

What makes Elementor’s support experience good is the active Facebook group.

If you leave a question, expect it to be answered within the day.

A large community of users willing to help each other out — that’s the advantage of Elementor’s popularity.

Granted, I would’ve preferred a live chat option. But I’m happy as long as there’s someone who can help me fix problems and answer questions.

Elementor pros and cons

To help you decide if Elementor is the right choice for you, let’s do a quick review of its strengths. And as much as I love Elementor, allow me to also mention a few things I wish they did better.

2. Divi

Divi Builder

Divi is another drag-and-drop page builder that will help you build captivating WordPress websites fast.

When using it for the first time, Divi’s page builder interface can be quite confusing. But after a few hours with the product, you’ll realize how powerful the platform can be for creating stunning pages.

What are Divi’s main features?

Divi has powerful page building tools that make it deserving of its popularity.

1. Invisible page builder interface

What makes Divi unique is the “invisible” page builder interface.

Unlike page builders like Elementor with a static panel for customizations, Divi keeps everything hidden.

All you’ll see is your page in its full splendor.

Divi’s page builder UI elements will only appear if you hover your mouse over the page’s content.

For example, if you want to add a new row, highlight the adjacent row and click the “plus” button.

You can then add elements or “modules” into empty rows and sections.

Just like Elementor, Divi has a handy search feature that lets you find the exact module you need.

That’s how you can add buttons, images, dividers, and other page elements to your Divi page.

2. Built-in animation and transform tools for visuals

Divi allows you to apply animations to visual elements like images and buttons within a few clicks.

Just open the settings popup of the image you want to animate and click ‘Animation’ under ‘Design.’

The available animations include fade, slide, bounce, zoom, flip, fold, and roll.

These animations certainly aren’t game-changers. But they’re nice to have in your back pocket if you want to create unique websites.

Divi also has powerful transform tools to bring your design ideas to life. You can scale, skew, move, and even rotate your images in three dimensions.

Since the page’s preview is updated in real time, you can check your progress as soon as you make changes.

3. Clean text editing experience

Thanks to Divi’s invisible interface, writing text on a page surprisingly feels natural for a page builder.

Keep in mind that some bloggers are easily distracted with on-screen visual information. But with Divi, you feel as if you’re typing on a minimalistic word processor.

Even the formatting options are hidden away unless you highlight the text you want to customize.

4. Pre-made layouts

Divi has a huge collection of over 1,000 website layouts that will get your WordPress development process up to speed.

I did notice, however, that a handful of themes share the same layout and overall design features. You won’t be able to tell the difference between some themes if you change their header images.

Still, having over a thousand pre-made layouts is nothing short of impressive. Even more layouts are added weekly so you won’t run out of inspiration for your next project.

Reviewing Divi’s support

The customer service aspect is where Divi really shines.

Since it’s a product of Elegant Themes, Divi users can rely on the company’s steadfast company support team.

They can also be reached directly from their members area via live chat. You can also get assistance through the community forums and the private Facebook group.

Fun fact: Thrive Architect used to be Thrive Content Builder.

Back then, Thrive Content Builder didn’t bring anything significant to the table.

But now that it’s Thrive Architect, it’s considered a top-tier page builder by the WordPress community.

What are Thrive Architect’s main features?

Thrive Architect is a lightweight and conversion-focused page builder designed to help you generate more sales.

1. Great for mobile user experience

One of my biggest concerns when it comes to page builders is their impact on user experience.

A page builder must be able to deliver both visual appeal and reliable website performance.

Additionally, it must provide the tools necessary to optimize the experience of mobile users.

Fortunately, all of the page builders in this list pass with flying colors in the user experience department.

Thrive Architect, in particular, has features aimed towards making mobile optimizations a walk in the park.

With Thrive Architect, you can:

2. User-friendly page builder interface (Elementor-like)

As an Elementor user, the first thing I noticed from Thrive Architect is the page builder interface.

I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not, but it looks like Thrive Architect drew inspiration from Elementor’s editor.

That’s actually a good thing since Elementor sets the gold standard in hassle-free website building.

3. Handy overlay tools for on-brand images, background images, and headers

When working with images, Thrive Architect offers something that a lot of users will probably overlook.

What it does better than most other page builders is header image customization.

Suppose you want to add a text overlay to a photo for your header.

To maximize readability, Thrive Architect allows you to easily add color overlays to any image.

Color overlays, along with image effects like opacity, blur, and grayscale filter, are all found in one place.

Thrive Architect pros and cons

Thrive Architect is undoubtedly a great alternative to Elementor, but it’s nowhere near perfect.

Here’s a recap of its pros and cons:

Thrive Architect pros

Thrive Architect cons

How much is Thrive Architect?

Just like Divi, Thrive Architect is part of a software ecosystem. But unlike the former, you have the option to purchase a single product license just for the page builder.

The monthly pricing is kind of steep for new bloggers. On the bright side, you can buy Thrive Architect as a single product for a one-time payment.

Still, the upfront cost of using Thrive Architect is something to think about.

4. Visual Composer

Visual Composer

Visual Composer is created by the same team that developed WPBakery — another page builder with drag-and-drop features.

This page highlights the difference between the two platforms.

The short story is, the developers created Visual Composer as an alternative since WPBakery is getting performance-related issues.

What are Visual Composer’s main features?

Visual Composer is a different kind of page builder that will walk you through each and every step.

1. Clean, step-by-step page builder interface

The Visual Composer page builder utilizes an interface that slowly unravels depending on what you need to see.

You start off by naming your page, setting a permalink, and choosing a layout.

Visual Composer first step
  • Save

After picking a layout, click ‘Add Element’ to reveal the elements panel.

From there, it’s only a matter of finding the stuff you want to add. Just click on the content element and it should automatically occupy the next available section.

That’s perhaps the cleanest and most beginner-friendly page building process I’ve ever experienced.

It’s similar to Divi’s invisible page builder in the sense that you’re only shown the interface you need to use.

2. Not your average content elements

As expected, Visual Composer has all the basic elements that modern websites use.

You can add text blocks, rows, images, buttons, and separators with just one click.

Pretty cool, but that’s not why Visual Composer is worth considering.

If you get the premium version, you’ll unlock Visual Composer’s entire arsenal of rich content elements.

That includes a wide array of stylized buttons, content grid layouts, third-party integrations, and all sorts of media.

3. Add-ons for serious WordPress developers

Want another proof that Visual Composer is hard-coded to make life easier for developers?

With add-ons, you can simplify a lot of what would’ve been very time-consuming tasks.

You can easily set up an “under construction” page, create global templates, configure popups — all with the help of add-ons.

It’s true that other page builders have features that match these add-ons. Visual Composer only made sure that the same tasks can be done more intuitively and effortlessly.

4. Versatile collection of templates

Visual Composer has a pretty impressive lineup of over 200 templates ready to be used.

These templates can be applied as soon as you create a new page. There are templates for landing pages, restaurants, slideshows, coming soon pages, online storefronts, and more.

Reviewing Visual Composer’s support

Visual Composer has a support ticketing system that’s only available for users with a premium license.

That’s about it, sadly.

They do have a help center, but I would definitely prefer an online message board. That way, you’re sure to get practical tips from actual people who experienced working with Visual Composer.

Using Visual Composer on a single website should be affordable enough for new website owners.

Getting a three-website license shouldn’t be too expensive, either. You just need to shell out an additional $50 to be able to use Visual Composer on two more websites.

What are Beaver Builder’s main features?

Here are the reasons why Beaver Builder caught my attention years ago:

1. Fast and customizable visual page builder

Creating WordPress pages with Beaver Builder is an absolute breeze.

It is, by far, the fastest page builder I’ve ever used. There are zero random slowdowns, input delays, and choppy animations.

All you have to do is expand the “plus” button and drag a module, row, or template into the page.

Apart from the fluidity of the page builder, Beaver Builder also allows some customization to the interface.

If you’d rather have a persistent left panel while working, you can actually dock the tools window to either side.

I like to keep it on the left side of the page preview — Elementor style.

2. Easily save modules for later use

The process is as straightforward as it can get. Use the customization panel to personalize the element and use the save buttons at the bottom.

3. Page templates optimized for performance and conversions

Beaver Builder boasts an assortment of landing and content page templates that are built to get results.

Each template is thematic and clearly designed with care. They’re not like the generic-looking, rushed sample pages that some builders offer.

4. Excellent customer support

When it comes to customer support, I’d say Beaver Builder does it best among the page builders on this list.

As always, customer assistance can be provided through a ticketing system. What makes Beaver Builder different is their commitment to respond to most questions within a few hours.

The only exceptions are tickets submitted on weekends and US holidays. Fortunately, there are three other places where you can get support:

There’s no one-size-fits-all page builder in WordPress website development.

Even my go-to builder — Elementor — has a few weaknesses that you should be aware of.

I hope this article helped you make a decision you’ll be happy with. I’m excited to hear from your feedback and suggestions once you do get your WordPress development in full swing.

Thanks and looking forward to your comments!
