  4. Hi, Ankit Bro. You cleared almost all my doubts. I learnt the complete process of Image Optimization for SEO. However, I have some questions in my mind. I am writing them below:

    • How can we protect images from theft?
    • Do you use image search to find any useful article?
    • Does Canva a free tool??
    • why to add “-” in alt content ??? cannot we add only space?
    • If we have so many related images, I mean screen shots then,
    how would we do naming?

I expect the answers from your side…Except of these questions, the complete work is excellent.

    Thanks for sharing.

    DO not stop——Keep trying……

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Nikhil,

Glad you asked these questions. Here are my replies:

      1. I don’t know the right way to protect the images but the things you can do is either block right click on your blog or apply watermark on your images. So, no one will use images which have your watermark on it. Do let me know what you are going to do.

      2. What do you actually mean bro? Please ask again.

      3. Yes, you can use Canva for Free.

      4. Don’t use hypen in alt text. It is for image file name. This-is-an-example.jpg.

      5. There is no particular pattern for that. I use to name images based on their nearby texts. (headings, sub-headings, topic etc.). I use my main keyword in featured image only.

These are the replies based on my understanding. Do let me know what you think about it and feel free to ask anymore question if you have.

Thanks for reading the article. 🙂

      – Ankit

  5. Bro, really liked the article. Detailed and informative. You can also include one more service in it for image compression which works really great and gives great amount of savings on JPEG compression, it is tools.dynamicdrive.com/imageoptimizer
Thanks a lot for this! 🙂

    1. Ankit Singla says:

  7. I am the daily visiter of your site sir ,your article is rocking ,i have a question for you Ankit sir ,the images of my blog not more then 100kb please suggest me it is right for seo or not .

    1. Ankit Singla says:

That size is fairly good but still you should try to compress them for lesser size.

  8. Jitendra Vaswani says:

Hi Ankit, This article clearly explains why Image Optimization SEO is very important most of the so called SEO experts dont follow this and call themselves as SEO expert. Few basics of images SEO can help use to rank images in very short time. I follow this and I have ranked many images for competitive keywords.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

Thanks for your feedback, Jitendra. Glad, you are doing pretty well with your images.

  9. Hi Ankit,
Thanks for sharing one stop solution for all SEO related stuff for images. Personally I do like your idea about removing hyperlink from images. It unnecessarily distracts users.

Captions are good when we want to describe something about an image. And no doubt image optimization is important for faster loading speed of a site. Google loves faster loading sites. Thus another plus point in SEO and rankings.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Narendra,

I personally feel that one should use hyperlinks only when he need to link to bigger images. Otherwise, there is no sense of such hyperlinks.

Surely, Captions are good for describing the images better and it also improves ‘visit time’ of your site as readers like to read the captions (in most of the cases). I started using captions and noticing the pretty good response.

      Thanks for your comment, Narendra.

  10. Hello Ankit,

Just wanted to ask one thing, umm How does it matter if we add dashes between the words of our filename? I mean, if we don’t add the dashes does it really make them non searchable?
Well I just want to ask why is a “file-name-of-an-image” better than “file name of an image”

    Thanks so much!

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Astha,

If you are a WordPress user, image name with dashes (name-of-the-image) and without dashes (name of the image) both are the same.

The reason is, WordPress automatically adds dashes to your image file names.

But if you are using any other blogging platform, especially “Blogspot”, then you will get in trouble.

The spaces between the terms will be replaced by %20 that means “name of the image” will be replaced by “name%20of%20the%20image”. Now you are smart enough to understand how it will ruin your image SEO. It will entirely change your target keyword.

Do let me know what you think about it?

      1. this reply cleared my doubt. I am using Blogger platform. And bro i have another question to ask. Blogger Vs WordPress which is best to operate?

And thank you very much for the great content.

        1. Thomas Greenbank says:

          Hi Abhijit.
It’s just my opinion, but I’d put WordPress ahead of any other platform for blogging websites. I’m not connected to W/P in any way, but when you look at ease of operation, availability of plugins, support etc there’s really no contest.

  11. Hello,
Ankit sir, I have read your article. It is useful for me but i want to say you that I have used both types of images (made by me and direct taken from google search). When I took image from google search it got rank in only 2 days without doing seo and mine was not showing after 2 months. Can you please guide me what to do to get rank for my image?

    thank you

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Krunal,

As per my understanding, if you use images downloaded from Google, they might get ranked faster because Google already have the record of those images. If you don’t rename the images, don’t resize them, Google will count them as duplicate images.

But if you create your own images, they are new to Google and maybe that’s why they take time to get ranked.

I create my own images and most of them rank very well. I shared all the steps I take to optimize my image. You can follow these techniques and hopefully you will also get the noticeable results.

Do let me know if you need any other help.

      Thank you,
      Ankit

  12. EJIGA GODWIN JNR says:

    HEY Ankit Singla
What you said is very true,I just discovered that if i rename some images say i rename an image to BEST PING SITE and upload it to my blog.It crawls on Search engine fastly .
This is one of the criteria i got to learn from you .
Thank you for the great tips.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Glad, you liked the article.

    2. Hi Ankit Sir, I read your article and that was great article.
But Sir, I have question for you that If I use google images after giving image credit then also that would be problem for me?

      Love your article, BigFan.

  13. Hi Ankit,
This is surely a most interesting piece of post. There is no doubting the fact that Google loves images that are well optimized and these can boost the rewards coming into a blog.

  15. Another awesome piece of content Ankit, Indeed for bloggers, Good!

I agree with every point on Image SEO and yes, we should consider it as equal to the content we craft as the blog post.

Choosing the exact name for the image, compressing it to reduced size to avoid loading problems and adding alt tag are the essential stuff has to be done for our every blog post images.

Yes, we should not take the images from Google Images as we would face copyright issues.

I feel good that am following most of your tips to take most out of my images from social media and search engines.

Thanks for showing some remarkable resources to design and compress the images.

My sincere thanks to you as you’ve helped me a lot in designing the stunning images for my blog MymagicFundas.

Keep your good work bro, thanks for writing and sharing this useful post.

    Have a great day ahead!

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Nirmala Mam,

      Thanks for your awesome feedback.

I am glad to know that you are already doing pretty well with your blog images. You are sharing them of Pinterest too and that is a big step in getting social exposure to your images.

You should start using these tools. Hopefully, they will be of higher use for you.

It’s my pleasure I could help you. Feel free to ask me for any help in future.

Thanks again for your comment and sharing my post with your social followers. It’s highly appreciated.

      – Ankit

  16. Hello Ankit,

You have explained each point very deeply. As you said in blog post that remove hyper links from image because your readers will be diverted but I think if you use this (target=”_blank”) then your readers will not be diverted to image. Do you think (target=”_blank”) is wrong practice? One more thing i would like to say that if you put image URL as it is then it will be ranked on Google organic and you will get readers from image as well.

    Let me know your thoughts

    Thanks

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Anant,

Thanks for sharing your valuable views here.

Let me share my thoughts with you.

Adding hyperlinks on the images is highly valuable when you have to link to a larger image. If you are showing small images in your blog posts, then there is no sense of adding hyperlinks. No one would like to click the images to see the same size image again in the new tab or new window.

And, it’s not good for your blog SEO as well. Do you still see any benefit of adding hyperlinks?

Google is smart enough to find your images from your blog posts. They will get indexed for sure, no matter if you add the image URL or not.

Google don’t rank the images based on their URL. Image file name, caption, alt text and the content near the images are very important factors to get your images ranked in top positions. Based on my personal experience, I can suggest you to do the same.

I would like to know your thoughts on it. Your thoughts/feedback is always welcome.

      Ankit

  20. Enticing kind of article. If one blogger feel that Google hates his/her blog, then this is a must read.

Images SEO is very important. This is also needed most especially if you run an online store.

Images have a big effect in attracting visitors. It is one of the reasons why your website load fast or slow too.

Optimize your Alt Tags intelligently. One of the simple rules when it comes to alt tags is… do not use alt tags for decorative images. Search engines may penalize you for over-optimization.

All in all, the ideas, and step by step guide shared here will create a huge impact if followed.

Your blog needs attention if images use weren’t optimized.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Metz,

Thanks for sharing your tip here. I also use the same strategy.

I don’t put my targeted keyword in alt tag for all the images. But leaving alt tag empty for other images is not a good idea, I believe.

We can put any descriptive alt tag there. It is far better than leaving it empty.

      What’s your thought on it?

      Glad you liked it.

  25. Hi Ankit,

Lovely post here. You have made a good attempt to clarify every issue related to blog post images. And yes, I agree that blog posts image optimizations is very much needed to rank a post.

One thing I would like to add is that if instead of one image per post, if we can add several images related to the content it will turn out to be better for optimization.

Thanks for the resources you provided like tiny png though I personally use photoshop to create the blog images.

    Thanks.
    Mainak

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Mainak,

I agree with you. Adding several images is useful but we must keep their size in mind. Adding lots of images with bigger size will increase the page loading time which will do no good with our blog post SEO.

I also like to use photoshop as it provides the freedom to design the images as per our wish. I shared the resources for non-designers, so that they can design their blog post images easily.

Glad you liked the article and thanks for your comment.

  26. Hi Ankit,
I Have a question about adsense.Minimum how many visitors on our blogger when we apply for adsense.Reply as soon as possible.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Muhammad,

You can apply anytime you want, but the good strategy is; apply only when you are getting enough traffic to make some profit from your ads. There is no sense of using Adsense when you are getting only 10 visits a day. Hope you got the answer.

  27. Rohan Chaubey says:

    Hi Ankit,

Glad you shared some basic as well as advanced tips for the Image SEO. Many of us tend to overlook these mistakes thinking it won’t cost anything. But I believe it does affects the rankings.

I use Canva quite often, never tried PicMonkey. Will give it a try someday.

I used TingPNG previously, but now I use Optimizilla. I find both the tools working well for compression.

Here is a question for you — As ALT tags/Texts, you insert keywords or describe the image?

To answer your question, I don’t use any plugins, except the optimizilla tool to compress the images. 🙂

All in all, great and resourceful post. Thanks.

    Rohan.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Rohan,

Thanks for mentioning Optimizilla here. I’ll definitely give it a try.

I use to insert my keyword in only the main image of the article. Most of the times, I describe the images only.

I believe that using keywords in alt text for all the images will over-optimize the article. What do you think?

I’m glad you liked the article and thanks for your comment.

      Ankit.

  28. Very informative post, Ankit!

Image search sends a lot of traffic to my blog. Though I don’t optimize every image on my blog but I do optimize most of them.

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Atish bro,

I optimize almost all the images on my blog just to maintain the page loading speed and On-page SEO score.

Glad you are getting good traffic from Google image search. 🙂

      Thanks for your comment.

      Ankit.

  29. Hello Ankit,

Very informative article. SEO optimized images help to get image search traffic and image optimization is very helpful to give hint about your topic to google. Thanks for in-depth post about image SEO 🙂

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Vishal,

Very true. Image alt text is a nice place to insert the target keyword. Image optimization helps in optimizing the whole article.

      Thanks for your comment.

  30. Hi Ankit Bro,
Thanks for sharing this awesome guide.
Image optimization is really important to make a post attractive. One can easily rank a image website by just optimizing Images on their website because these rank fast if these are your own.
As you explain why google hates your blog images, it is important to have your own copyright images.
Thanks for sharing these tools specially Canva. These really help us to make own images. I use it very first time from your blog.

  31. Soumyakanti Ray says:

Thanks Ankit for the article. Sometimes I was uploading full images and then resize it according to my blog width. But now I got it that I was doing wrong. Sometimes it’s not possible to use Photoshop to resize all images. But you have given a great solution of online resizing. Though I do lot of editing using these sites like Picmonkey but from now I will resize too daily. Thanks bro for this well written article.

    Regards,
    Soumyakanti Ray

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Soumyakanti,

Image resizing is very important. You should use images similar or lesser than your blog’s width area. It will improve your page loading speed.

I’m glad you liked the article.

      Thanks,
      Ankit

  32. Awesome and completely worthy article.

Each and every point related to Optimizing Images is absolutely correct and we must follow it while adding images on our blog. I am going to concentrate my mind more on Image Compression.

    thanks Bro Ankit !!

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hi Amit,

Image compression is must to maintain your page loading speed. Make sure to focus on that. 🙂

  33. Hi Ankit,

What an awesome post indeed! I am very weak at creating my own images. But few days back, I heard that google hates using copyright images or bad images. Thats why I started creating my own images and I am really improving.

But, your deep guide on creating own images will help me lot and can improve me more on that.

Thank you so much for sharing your trick here. I really needed this info.

Choosing a right alt tag or title for the image is most important for onpage optimization. And as per google’s mobile friendly update, we should focus more on compressing the images and adding a right size as per our content.

Thanks again for the awesome trick. This is very helpful.

Keep sharing! Have a great weekend!

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Nisha,

As per my understanding, custom designed images not only protect our blog from any copyright issues, but they are good to improve conversions as well. A well-designed image can attract the wider audience from social networks and it improves the click through rate as well. What do you think about it?

Thanks for talking about mobile friendliness. It’s very important to compress the images so that they can load very easily in mobile devices (with low-speed internet connection too).

I use photoshop to create my images, which tool do you use?

      Thanks for your comment.

      – Ankit

  34. Hello Ankit

Yeah ankit you are right, if we put right keywords in alt tag & title tags and its help us a lot to boost our ranking.

    Thanks

  35. Hello Ankit Bro,

I really have no words to talk about this article; it’s really so much awesome!

YOu’ve explained everything in so much detail, there’s just no need to add anything more!

These days; the visual data on our website is very important… One can write great content with over 4000 words but without images; readers won’t be interested to read it at all.

Even the images that we have should be have good quality if not better…

Free stock images site are really a boon for bloggers, who can’t afford to buy premium stock images. Free stock images offer great quality pictures that make our site look better!

For my new blog; I choose images from stocksnap.io

Even stuff like Creative Commons images, allows us to use others work for free just by giving credit!

I’m glad you mentioned TinyURL, will be using it from now!

Last but not the least, the content on your site is always top notch… Keep it up bro!

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Abhishek Bro,

You are right, visual content is so much important for readers and for search engines as well. As per my understanding, Google loves the articles which have visual content in it.

A good quality image improves readability of our site which reduces the bounce rate. What do you think about reducing the bounce rate using good quality images?

Thanks for sharing stocksnap.io. It will definitely help me and others to get the royalty-free images for their blog posts.

There are several tools we can use to compress the images. I found TinyPNG the best. Do you know any other tool for image compression?

One good thing about my theme is that it has inbuilt image compression feature which automatically compress the images during the uploading process. I don’t have need to compress them separately. Isn’t cool? 🙂

I’m glad you liked the content. Thanks for your awesome feedback.

      Regards,
      Ankit

  36. Siraj Wahid says:

    Hey Ankit,

It’s been a long time i have visited any blog in the blogosphere and read a post with such great interest.

Your article caught my attention because you’ve targeted the most common mistake which the newbie bloggers do, they only focus on their content ranking and not on their images ranking.

Same was the case with me when i used to do full time blogging, my only intention was to rank my content, images were nowhere on my mind and i was too dumb to think a little about Google image search.

One day i came across Jetpack (Site Stats) and i was amazed to see that an image was bringing a whole of a traffic to my blog and the most amazing thing is that i wasn’t aware of image SEO at that time, it was automatically ranked but my curiosity to find how it got ranked increased to a profound extent and i tried to figure out the exact reasons behind the image which was automatically ranked.

The main reasons were that i installed EWWW Image Optimizer few days back as mentioned in your article but i don’t think it was a valid reason as the image which i used in that article was customized and it was made by me, alt tags and captions were my routine things as they matter a lot in content seo too so i always used alt tags in my articles.

Beside all these things my post outclassed all other posts on my blog, on my social media profiles and search engine pages, traffic on that article always remained in greater numbers and what i noticed is that a number of blogs were using that image in their articles and were linking back to me by giving credits to my blog.

It felt good to share my experience after a long time, thanks for providing the opportunity Ankit.

    Cheers!

    -Siraj

  37. Hi Ankit Singla, i read your whole article, yes u r right When we use fresh images or self made images and remember some check points as you told like alt tag, image size, compression etc.. then image will surely rank in google images and also drive traffic from other social sites like pinterest, flickr, devianart etc…

  38. but i have a doubt, suppose i m running a news site then can i use twitter images ? bcz news sites have to cover news asap or i have to take subscription of paid stock images sites (shutterstock, gettyimages)?

  39. Hi Ankit!

Very interesting post here. I don’t think many bloggers really pay attention to their images.

I didn’t care to optimize my blog images at the beginning. But, later on I started to learn about the advantages of doing it.

Now, I optimize every image I use on my blog posts.

Ever since I started doing it, I started to get some free organic traffic from Google Images. So, I know these tips are powerful!

One of the things I always do, is put my long tail keyword as the name of the image file. It tends to rank better and faster in the Google Images section.

I think most bloggers underestimate the Google Images section. There is a lot of organic traffic there! 😉

Thanks for sharing these helpful tips on image optimization for the search engines!

Keep up the great work with your blog here!

    It looks very good! 😀

    Have a great week!

  40. Hi Ankit,

Thanks for this wonderful post. I’m getting lot of traffic from images for my keywords. As you have mentioned here, it’s very easy to rank for images. I’m happy that i found about canva website here. I tried editing it in and it is awesome. Thanks for the share.

  41. saqib ahmad says:

Thank You for pointing out the website for making images. I am graphic designer so, I mostly try making a perfect image using adobe illustrator. I am getting google image search traffic that is because I always try add the images with recommended size. I don’t think it’s really hard to create the images in designing software since you just need few things to learn.

Keep Adding super awesome post like these!

    Best Regards,

    Saqib Ahmad

  42. Hey Ankit,

That was a very amazing post. You explained everything very well.
Using Images in a right way is a thing which can get you a lot of traffic and can be very beneficial. People who add their Blog Names on the images do a good work because when someone searches for images and finds out an image with the Site’s name, he will surely search for it and the site owner will get some extra views. Also creating high quality images with some tools for you posts is a good idea. This increases the trust value of the site.

Using Alt text, Caption, changing the name of the image to the keyword is a good idea for Image SEO and I use it everytime I upload any image on my blog.

Anyway, that was a really nice and helpful post for all the newbies and beginners out there.

    Keep up the good work.

  45. Mind blowing tutorial how to optimize images for google. however, i have a question related to alt tag. in my case if i create a post then often i add only 3 images in my post.. the main and two others.

if my post title is look like this… Hippo Responsive Blogger Template then i use hippo blogger template in main image as alt tag and what should then i use for other two images ? what keywords or used same for those 2 images also..

Also let me know, does keywords stuffing used in image “alt tag” leads to penalty ?

    1. Ankit Singla says:

      Hello Hafeez,

As per my understanding, you should use either your secondary keywords or related terms as an alt text for the rest of your blog posts images.

I suggest you not to do keyword stuffing anywhere on your blog. It leads to the penalty. Instead, you should use LSI keywords which will improve your search engine rankings.

I 100% agreed with you. A blog without a relevant image is like a gun without bullet. You have to have at least a picture for your post. I love your idea to make the images optimized and SEO friendly. ty for sharing it.

  70. Hi Ankit, thanks for all the tips there. I personally have seen a lot of valuable blog posts being mired by unnecessarily hyper-linked images (that of course, as you say, redirect substantial link juice to unimportant image pages).

I don’t want to sound irrelevant here.. but is there a chance of you coming up with a similar blog post for content videos as well? Would surely like to follow that as well.

    Thanks in advance!

  71. Hi Ankit, well written post, as always – Thanks! Hmm, those above mentioned things might be considered by other readers as “basic” stuff, but to cite other blogs, they really fail when it comes to optimisation of images, so this is a good read for all of the bloggers.

  85. SHAIK SARKAR ALI says:

nice post i will try this tips for my blog

  86. Hi Ankit,

Great synoptic approach to the topic. I don’t agree with everything said, but that’s the point right? Ask questions, clash opinions and experiences and come up with conclusions.

I use keyword both in names and alt tags of the image, of course not stuffed but I don’t shy from it. If it’s a hiking boot in the image, it’s a hiking shoe, if you are comparing boots, it makes sense to say that one boot is top rated.

I haven’t seen any penalties over the years for that kind of variation and mixing stuff up.

Anyway, my question is about experiences with using text and headlines in the image itself. I’ve seen one or two mentions somewhere that it’s a no-no and from looking at the results it would seem it’s true but I like specific experiences, not just opinions without any backing.

    Thanks for the text again

  99. Hi Krunal,

I study your content and it’s amazing part of the content.

Images optimization SEO is extremely essential and big impact on getting traffic.

In Image SEO, The ALT tag is used by screen readers; the web browsers used by blind and creatively affected individuals, to tell them what is on the picture.

This is a complete HTML image tag:

Each image should have an ALT written text. Not just for SEO reasons, but also because blind and creatively affected individuals otherwise won’t know what the picture is for.

    Have an excellent day ahead!

    Thanks,
    Joyharry

  131. Hello, Ankit! I hope you have a nice day! This is a good reference to understand more how to optimize an image for a search engine. Thank you for sharing your skill. There are many thoughts I got here. But, in another topic, I found that getting an image from another blog or site and then posting it on our blog, we need to credit the owner by direct linking to the source blog or site. How do you think about credit linking an image to the source may take effect on SEO. If so, is it good or bad for SEO if the image credit is linking to the source blog / site? I would like to know from you if you know about this issue. Thank you again!

    Hi Ankit,

Wow. Superb post with great guidance. Your post can be used as a image optimization reference.

Only adding ALT tag to the image is not the good idea for optimization. Image file name, format, description should be optimized also.

I use WP Smush plugin to reduce size. Again thanks for sharing.

  152. Hi Ankit,
Great eye opener as I’m just about to start a blog. Was struggling a bit on what Plugins to use on WordPress… Would you recommend Imsanity? Or SEO friendly images & WP Smush? …Also if I have Yoast does it work on Image SEO optimization as well ? Im just a bit confused on what combination to use? Would really appreciate your opinion on the same.
    Thanks Zarina

  156. Hi Ankit,

I use Lazy Load by WP Rocket to Lazy Load Images and WP Smush for Compressing Images 🙂

Is any other plugin better for compression or lazy load?

    1. Hi Rahul,

I use ShortPixel WordPress plugin, it works well.

You can use Kraken.io site as well for image compression. It is one of my favourite services. 🙂
