Stop reading this article right now if you:

  • Don’t want to know how your competitors are gaining those CUTE top Google positions?
  • Don’t want to know from where they are getting backlinks?
  • Don’t want to know how they are attracting natural backlinks from high domain authority sites?

Want to know all of them?

Super… Let’s dive in.

This ONE Thing Can Skyrocket Your Search Rankings

Check this:

Backlinks Statistics

According to Brian Dean’s study, Pages with more backlinks tend to rank higher than pages with fewer backlinks.

That means, quality backlinks are the key of SEO Success.

In this article, you will learn:

  • How To Check Backlinks of Competitor’s Website (So that we could plan our link building strategies)
  • arrow-circle-rightHow To Check Backlinks of a Single Page / Competiting Page (to do calculation how many backlinks we would need to outrank them.)
  • arrow-circle-rightHow To Use Backlink Gap To Find From Where All of Our Competitors are Building Backlinks (so that we could also create backlinks from the same sources.)

There are a lot of backlink checker tools available in the market and you can use anyone of them, but if you ask for my recommendation, I suggest using SEMrush.

And for this tutorial, I will be using SEMrush only.

If you haven’t created your FREE SEMrush account yet, do it first so that you could follow the tutorial step-by-step.

Ready? Let’s begin.

How To Check Backlinks of Competitor’s Website

This is the first step where we will take an overview of their link profile.

Once you sign up for a free SEMrush account, click on Backlinks Analytics under Link Building section.

SEMrush Backlink Analytics

Enter your competitors’ domain name and press “Check it” button.

SEMrush Backlink Checker

Go straight to the Backlinks tab and select “Follow” to know how many dofollow (Value adding) backlinks they have.

SEMrush Backlink Analysis Checker

In my case, has total 2064 dofollow backlinks which is quite good.

Competitors Backlinks Analysis

Now, how can YOU use this information?

Check few of their backlinks and you’ll notice a pattern. Try to figure out, “HOW” are they getting those backlinks?

but how meme

No need to worry. Just see if:

  • Are they building those links themselves through guest blogging?
  • Are majority of those links are from Blog commenting?
  • Or (Best of all), are they getting those links naturally?

When I deeply analysed backlink profile of GoBloggingTips, I noticed that Akshay is getting a ton of natural backlinks.

Now, what do I need to do to outrank him?

I also need to attract a ton of natural backlinks (or may be more than that).

Why natural backlinks?

Because I can’t compete with him by just doing guest blogging.

It’s not possible for me to write a ton of guest posts. Right?

If you find that your competitors are also attracting natural backlinks, try to do the same.

In my article 19+1 Ways To Cleverly Get Natural Backlinks To Your Blog, I have explained simple and quick hacks to start attracting natural backlinks. Must read this article.

This is how we plan our link building strategy.

Now let’s move on to the next hack.

How To Check Backlinks of a Competing Page?

There are several reasons why you might want to do it?

  1. You published a new blog post and it got stucked at 8th or 9th position and you want to improve its ranking
  2. You want to beat your competitors in SERP (Search Engine Results Page.)

Whatever your reason be, I’ll show you how to do EASILY.

Let’s see…

This time, enter your competitor’s page URL into the text field and press search button.

Check competitors backlinks

Scroll down to see how many follow backlinks they have for that page.

check page url backlinks

In my case, my competing URL has 57 backlinks.

Now what should be your next move?

Go to the source pages (from where they have acquired the links) and check WHY they got the backlink from that website (or why that website linked to your competitor’s page?)

Here are 2 most common reasons:

  • Your competitor has an in-depth article which is worth linking as a resource
  • arrow-circle-rightHe has some kind of graphics (images) in his blog post that the other website used and linked him as a source.

Now based on this information, you need to plan your own strategy.

These steps will help you:

  • Make your blog post much much better than your competitor
  • arrow-circle-rightUse a lot of images and videos (if possible, your own original stuff) that other people can use in their content by providing you the credit.
  • arrow-circle-rightFollow my techniques to improve your Google Rankings. You need to be found by others to get links from them.
  • arrow-circle-rightAnd finally, use Brian Dean’s Skyscrapper technique to steal most of their backlinks.

Now, it’s the time to FILL THE GAP.

Fill The Gap To Beat All Your Competitors

There is one more amazing tool in your SEMrush’s dashboard that we will use today and that is “̌Backlink Gap.

Let me quickly explain what it is and how it can help you in link building.

With Backlink Gap tool, you can compare 5 of your competitors at the same time to see from where they all are getting most of their backlinks.

That means, if you see that all of them are getting backlinks from and that’s why their ranking is super high, you can also reach out to or other similar sites for backlinks.

Let’s see how it works:

Go to the Backlink Gap tool…

Enter your blog URL along with 4 of your competitors (we are doing this to find the backlink gap)

SEMrush Backlink Gap

Scroll down and select your domain from the drop down menu.

select your domain

Now you will be provided a list of all the websites from where your competitors have the backlinks but you do not.

Like, all of my 4 competitors have links from but I do not have.

This is a backlink opportunity that I am missing.

Backlinks Opportunity

If you see the image above, is also a good opportunity for me.

If you invest little bit of your time with Backlink Gap, you can easily find great backlink sources.

Try to acquire links from those sources using different link building methods.

Well guys, this is how I check my competitors’ backlinks and plan my own link building strategies.

You can replicate the same strategies to easily steal your competitors backlinks and outrank them in SERP.
